"Allen Automatic Transmission has been a complete blessing. After over a year of dealing with car problems that two dealerships couldn't fix & many excuses, my uncle recommended that I take my car here to fix my ongoing shifter issue & my transmission problems. Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get my transmission fluid changed?

For everyday driving, our La Crosse transmission shop recommends changing your vehicle’s transmission fluid every 2 years or 24,000 miles. However, if your vehicle is used for towing or holding heavy loads on a regular basis, then you should replace your transmission fluid more often. If you are unsure, bring your vehicle into our shop and we would be happy to perform diagnostic service to determine when your fluid needs to be changed.

What is the difference between a remanufactured and a rebuilt transmission?

A remanufactured transmission is completed by the manufacturer and is set to original specifications and tested against original equipment standards. It is essentially a new transmission. A rebuilt transmission is repaired so it can operate again, so most of the existing parts of the transmission still remain and the damaged/broken parts are replaced.

How can I best maintain my transmission?

Of course, bringing in your vehicle for scheduled transmission maintenance is one of the best ways to increase the longevity of your transmission. Before driving, you should also make sure you have an appropriate amount of transmission fluid, which is typically changed at the same time you get your oil changed. If you feel like something is wrong with your transmission, do not continue to drive it as it is not safe and may result in more damage and in a larger, more expensive transmission repair.

What causes differential failure?

There are several factors that can cause a differential to fail, including using the wrong lubricant in your transmission or water entering through vents and causing rust to form on the bearings and gears. Wear over time can also cause your differential to fail. Our La Crosse transmission experts have the diagnostic equipment to determine the reason for your differential failure as well as the ability to repair your differential.

When is it time change my hoses and belts?

At Allen Automatic, we recommend that you change your hoses and belts around 35,000 miles and 60,000 miles to ensure your vehicle continues running smoothly. The costs for belt and hose replacement varies depending on your engine.

How can I tell that my brakes are wearing out?

When your brakes are wearing out you will typically experience a screeching or grinding sound whenever you put on your brakes. You may also notice braking require more physical effort, which can be caused by air in your hydraulic system. Our La Crosse transmission repair technicians will help determine the amount of wear on your brakes and recommend immediate service or schedule service for a later time.

What is a clutch?

The clutch connects the engine to the transmission by engaging the flywheel, which allows you to shift gears while driving.

How much does it costs to replace a car battery?

As battery replacement is a fairly quick process, labor costs are usually below $25-$30. The overall cost can vary depending on the quality of the battery used in your vehicle. Typically, the higher quality the battery, the higher the cost of that battery. Please feel free to contact us or stop by the shop if you have any questions.

What causes my check engine light to come on?

Your vehicle’s computer system will turn on your check engine light when there could be problems that you may not notice in day-to-day driving. It is important to have an experience technician use diagnostic tools and equipment to determine exactly why your check engine light is on.

When should I get my fuel filter changed?

If you are experiencing some hesitation when trying to accelerate, it most likely means that your fuel filter needs to be changed. For optimal performance, we recommend having your fuel filter changed around each 25,000 mile interval.
